I can make links across texts by recognising connectives or adverbial clauses

In this unit I learnt about what a connective and a adverbial clause is.

A connective is a word that joins sentences together such as and, because, usually.

An adverbial clause is gives us additional information about e.g. the time, place, or action which is described in the rest of the sentence.

Here is a link to a compare and contrast map of an adverbial clause and a connective

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

W.A.L.T I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

I learnt there is always a way to simplify things especially with strategy 3 Link to strategy 3 because when I first look at the question it looked really hard then when I tried simplifying it, it was a lot easier.

Something I found challenging is finding the right way to simplify equations every time, because sometimes there were two ways to simplify the questions and sometimes I wasn't quite sure which one to use.

Extend abstract task 👇🏼
Use a range of multiplicative strategies when operating on whole numbers

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

The escape

A prisoner sits in his cell planning his escape. The prisoner is kept in by 5 laser beams, which operate along a corridor. Each laser is switched off at a specific time interval for just long enough to allow a person to walk through. The time between being switched off for each laser is shown below:

  • Laser One = every 3 minutes
  • Laser Two = every 2 minutes
  • Laser Three = every 5 minutes
  • Laser Four = every 4 minutes
  • Laser Five = every 1 minutes

The guard patrols and checks the prisoner each time all the laser beams are off simultaneously. Because each laser only switches off for a short time the prisoner knows he can only get past one laser at a time. He has to get past the five lasers from 1 to 5 in order. Laser One is at the entrance of the prisoner’s cell and laser Five is at the door to the outside. He also knows that if he spends longer than 4 minutes 12 seconds in the corridor an alarm will go off.

Can the prisoner escape without the alarm in the corridor going off? Yes

If he can escape, how many minutes should he wait before passing Laser One?33 minutes from when the lasers are all switched off at the same time

How much time will he have after passing Laser Five before the guard raises the alarm?23 minutes
Here is my working out
So in total it will take 4 minutes from 33 minutes after the quard has checked.

Band excellence #6

This week at band we started of by getting given a new song which was called Hine He Hine which is famous from the nights when goodnight kiwi was on the television at night when all the broadcasting is done for the evening. Then for the rest of the practice we just practised that song which was alot of fun espiecally because we knew the backstory behind the song.

The care value I showed was excellence because when we got given the new song I tryed my hardest and showed excellence to learn as much of the song as I could.

The leadership trait I showed was resilence because I have never heard the song before so I found it alot harder to learn the song but I kept trying different stratigys to learn it.

Apply simple linear proportions, including ordering fractions

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

Please complete these two problems. You will need to explain how you got the answer.

Question 1
In our household, there are twice as many cats as humans, with sixty legs in total.

How many cats are there to be fed?
12
I figured out this answer by working out the ratio of cats to humans which was two to one, after that I  worked out the leg ratio which was eight to two I then worked out the percentage of human legs to cat legs and then added it to the total number of sixty.

Question 2
Three men run a business together.
The proportion of the profit they each get at the end of the month is based on the proportion of the funds they have invested in the business.
The April profit is shared out so that Al gets one third, Bob gets one half and Chuck gets one sixth.
In May, Des joins the group, investing half as much as Bob inves
What share of the profit can Des expect to get?

1/4

I worked out that Des get ¼ because bob has half of the profit so if you split ½ in half you get ¼

Dance excellene #5

This week we started dance, our teacher is called Dean he is a really good dancer at the start I really wasn't looking foward to it but he made it alot of fun. We always start of by getting in girl and boy lines then he goes over what we practised the day before. He will then teach us new moves. We are doing two dances Jive and hip hop. I personally like hip hop better. On Friday we got taught this new move it is called the running man it is probably the hardest move we have done yet but I really like it because it challenges me.

The care value I showed was excellence because I challenged myself and didn't give up with the running man.

The leadership trait I showed was Goal focused because when I couldn't do the running man the first time I kept trying until I mastered it.

Librarian excellence #5

This week at librarian Johanna and I put away the books in a flash because there wasn't many, then we went onto the desk to get and return peoples books thats my favourite part of doing librarian duty. When the line died down I went over to the computers to check out what books I still have to read for the forty book challenge I saw I still needed to read historical fiction so I asked Dabok if she had any suggestions because she has already read two books form that genre she suggested a book to me so I got it out.

The care value I showed was: Active thinking because when I didnt know what book to read for historical fiction I asked someone who was more than happy to help.

The leadership trait I showed was active thinker because when I didn't know what historical fiction book to choose I asked Dabok for some help.

HLC excellence #5

E6. Plan a holiday (minimum of two nights away) for your family. Prepare a budget for travel, accommodation and activities.

This week I decided to do this home learning challenge because Ed Sheeran is doing a tour we decided to go to Melbourne as we have been wanting to go shopping there for a while. My budget for Mum and I for this trip is $2,981 +$150 a day for food and $200 for public transport plus shopping $$$. We will depart chrischurch at 4:00pm on Thrusday 8th of March 2018 and we will arrive back on Monday the 12th at 11:55. The Thursday we get there we will pretty much do nothing apart get some dinner we will be staying at the Rydges then the next day ( Friday ) we will go shopping at the city centre which will be alot of fun especially since my best friend and her mum are also coming on the trip, later that night we will go to the Eureka skydeck in southbank which is sort of like the sky tower in Auckland (here is a picture)

On Saturday we will wake up have some breackfast and head on the free tram to Victoria Market we will spend the majority of the day there we will have dinner later on then head back to the hotel to get ready for the Ed Sheeran concert. On the sunday we will go to the melbourne adventure park ( water park and theme park ) we will probably spend the whole day there when we get back we will just relax after a long day. The next day we will go to jumpdeck ( Trampoline arena) this will only cost $12 because my mum doesn't want to do it (she will be a spectater) we will spend the rest of the day packing up our stuff or shopping then later on head to the airport and come back to chrischurch.

Airfares: $1,318.00
Accomadation: $1,177
Ed Sheeran concert: $320
Eureka skydeck: $44
Jumpdeck: $12
Adventure park: $84
Plus food, public transport and shopping.

The care value I showed was Active thinking because I researhed and planned this for the people going to Melbourne with me.

Band excellence #4

This week at band practice we all got really excited because we got told that we had a surpise but when we found out what it was we were a little disappointed ( It was a music folder ) We practised our song the whole time then when most people left Maddy and I asked if Mr Rule could play a waiata on the piano he could so we played along on the guitar with him it was alot of fun.

The care value I showed was: Clean up after yourself because we put all the stands ad chairs away were they came from.

The leadership trait I showed was Motivatinal because I motivatated myself to keep practicing the song the reason I needed motivatiion was because we have been practising the song for a long time.

Librarian excellence #4

This week Johanna got back from her holiday so we did library duty together we did it on Thursday instead of Wednesday this week because I had band on Wednesday. We started of by putting away all the books it took like five minutes because they were all picture books, I then went onto scanning books we have a system she scans I type its kinda cool.

The care value I showed was: Use your time wisely because I didn't muck around when putting the books away.

The leadership trait I showed was Trustworthy because I made sure that I helped Mrs Ward out at the library some point in the week.

HLC excellence #4

C6. Organise a collection of old toys and/or clothes for charity. Deliver it to your chosen charity yourself and take photos!

I decided to donate some old clothes that don't fit me and some shoes to the child cancer bins outside New World. They use the clothes for kids with cancer that can't afford new clothing and some of the clothes even get shipped over to papua new guinea for children to enjoy. Here are some photos of me taking them to the bins
I also donated hockey sticks (2) to Sockburn School because our hockey club got asked by Sockburn School to donate any shinpads balls sticks etc because they want to encourage there students to give hockey a go.

The care value I showed was: Be aware of others because I put the time and effert into caring for others.

HLC excellence #3

A5. Redesign a room in your house. Change the place of the furniture.. Take before and after photos

I decided to do this HLC because I haven't changed my room around in a while. This is some of the photos of my before.

Something I really wanted to change was where my bed was positioned so I wanted to have it on the wall I also really want to change my duvet. Something I wanted to take away are the photos on my wall because they keep on falling down. Here are some after photos

Something that is obviously different is that I turned my room into a disco room I loved that effect.

The care value I showed is: Clean up after yourself because when I had a massive pile of room decor on the floor I felt like giving up but I didn't.

Garden to Table excellence #3

This week was the first week of Garden to Table. We started of with Mr McAven telling us that we are the only school in NZ that gives knifes to five year olds. Then we went onto watching videos about how to hold a knife and how to chop and slice lastly we watched a video about speed cooking it was hilarious (This is a link to the video) We then went out to the garden and moved the pavers out of the glass house to the other side of the school we did this because Mr McAven is going to take away the glass house due to weather damage. It really hurt moving the pavers because our hands were in such a weird position for ages so when we wanted to stretch them out after they ached.

The care value I showed was: follow instructions because we moved the pavers when we were told to and toke them to the right place.

The leadership trait I showed was Trustworthy because we proved to Mr McAven we could handle monitering younger kids with sharp knifes.

Librarian excellence #3

This week at the library I knew my friend wouldn't be there because she is overseas so I self managed and found someone else to help me out I asked Brianna she was more than happy to help out. I was on the computer until 1:10 and for the rest of the time I put away the books Brianna didn't get around to doing.

The care value I showed was: Communicate quietly and respectfully because when I asked Brianna if she could help me out at the library I said it respectfully if I didn't she might not of helped me out.

The leadership trait I showed was Trustworthy because I didn't let Mrs Ward down by not having two people to help her out.

HLC #2 excellence

E2. Research another country, compare it to N.Z. Present the similarities and the differences.

This week I did a HLC (Up there ^) I found it fascinating because my neighbors are from England so it was good to see the similarities and differences of our two countries. Something I found out was that we have very similar land mass but they have a poplulation 65,511,098 people and we have 4,604,871 people.

The care value I showed was: Be aware of others because I was making myself aware of the differences of our countries.

This is my map.

New Zealand and United Kingdom

Similarities
Differences
Both have similar land mass there is only 10% difference.
English people have higher unemployment rates than New Zealanders
The murder rate is equal
The United Kingdom uses nearly half as much electricity as New Zealand.
They both  have similar weather conditions.
It is a lot cheaper in New Zealand for medical care.
We are both  ruled by the same monarchy Queen Elizabeth.
In New Zealand you are more likely be in prison than in the united Kingdom
Some of the south island looks very similar to the english highlands.
English families have less babies than New Zealand families.
