Current Events Term 1

Current Events Term 1

In Current Events I covered these topics:
  • The design of the Halswell Skate Park and I made a submission to the council.
  • Donald Trump’s Refugee Plan
  • Christchurch Earth Memorial
  • The new Ngā Puna Wai Sports Facility
  • The Red Zone and Avon River Regeneration Plan with a submission to the council.

My favourite topic was The Red Zone and Avon River Regeneration Plan with a submission to the council. because it was interesting learning about something that I have heard about before and drove threw. Another reason this was my favourite is because I know some people who live in the red zone it is cool to learn about what happened to them.

Here Is a link on the Red Zone and Avon River Regeneration Plan.

The Reading National Standards I have achieved are (delete the ones that are not relevant)
  • Year 7 and 8
    • Identifying and resolving issues that come from competing information in texts
gathering, evaluating, and synthesising information across a small range of texts
    • I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.

Band excellence #2

Band practice this week we didn't actually pratice our songs because Mrs Trotter wanted us to make a video to introduce ourselfs to present at the celebration of learning assembly. We made the video it was alot of fun espiecally at the end when we all rocked out playing air instruments. I do have to admit though, it took awhile to make the video but thats alright. After that Mr Rule asked who wanted to come up on the stage and say 'We are the Oaklands School band and we want to show you something..." So Maddy and I voluntered to so we spent the rest of the practice doing that which I really enjoyed.

A care value I showed was listen respectfully because when everybody else was recording there bits I stayed quite and listen carefully the whole time even though it was a long proccess.

The leadership trait I showed was Goal focoused because we had to finish the video for Mrs Trotter by the end of the practice.

Librarian excellence #2

This week was my last week of librarian duties for the term. There wasn't any books to put away so I got straight into scanning peoples books its always its the busiest at the start I usually am putting the books away at the start so I don't usually get to get the busy part of scanning so that was interesting after that Johanna took over scanning and I went around straighting the books up to use my time wisely. At the end Mrs Ward said she was very happy that Johanna and I turned up every week to our duties so she gave us easter eggs to congratulate us.

The care value I showed was use my time wisely because when Johanna was doing the scanning I found something good to do in this case it was straighting the books up.

The leadership trait I showed was Active thinker because I thought of something productive to do when Johanna was scanning.

Term 1 Novel Study

Term 1 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel Trash by Andy Mulligan

I found this novel Fascinating because I never knew that people lived on dumpsites it was amazing to see how happy they were, It is a bit sad though because they live their lifes on dumpsites and have to work their whole life especially those people who have no family or home literally they live on a pile of trash.

During the novel I had to complete two major assessment tasks. The first is an Explain Map which shows the consequences of a major event in the book. The second was a Describe++ Map (Inference map) which shows I how I have connected prior knowledge and other experiences to what I have been reading to make an inference.
  • Link to Explain Map Link
  • Link to Inference Map Link

National Standard this covers

  • Year 7/8  Standard
    • using several pieces of information to make inferences
using their prior knowledge, along with information in the text, to interpret abstract ideas, complex plots, and sophisticated themes
    • I can use a range of strategies, such as inferring, to work out more complex words

Use simple fractions and percentages to describe probabilities

Assessment task: Use simple fractions and percentages to describe probabilities

Question 1:

So I worked it out by if you have 6 different topping I worked out who many different pizzas with two topping you could have which was 15 and Penny Wanted 1 pizza so the answer is 1/15 but you can convert 1/15 to a simpler fraction of ⅕ so that is the answer.

Question 2:
Show your working and answers here:
2a: The possibility of pulling out the same colour is ½ so if they pay for two bubble gums each they will probably get the same colour. Spend would be $2.

2b: She will probably have to spend three 50c coins on each twin because there is a one in three chance they will get each colour with three 50c coins. To total spend of $3

2c: ⅓ chance so 3 times per child or $1.50.  Total spend $4.50.

Question 3:

Show your working and answer here:
Q1: Everytime he lays 4 tiles there is four ways of doing it. This happens 5 times so the number of possible ways fred could lay tiles on Sue’s kitchen floor are 4x4x4x4x4= 1024
Q2: This would be 4x4x4x4x4...25 times

My next step is to try to explain my strategies better in more sense because some of my answers I think are a  bit confusing and I can't find a easier way to say some of them , I think I really to work on my time tables to answer questions within questions.

Finally, add the screenshots from the 3 IXL activities you did here:

HLC excellence #1

R3. Research food from another culture. Prepare a dish from this culture and serve it to your family.

I decided to do this home learning challenge because I have traveled to Thailand and it is one of my favourite countries. I was only year two but really enjoyed trying the different foods unlike my brother Thomas. So I prepared a Thai dish called Chicken pad Thai which is one of our family favourites.

The care value I showed was: Try your best because I tried as hard as I could to get it as good as the Thai people.

Here is some photos of me preparing and the final dish

Iibrarian excellence #1

At librarian duty today we started putting the most enormous pile of books away, then Johanna went to the librarians desks to check out books. As soon as she got there the three bells rang and everybody thought they were meant to go to there classes but they were are actually aloud to stay in the library
so for the last ten minutes of lunch we didn't really have a lot to do because there was only one person left.

The care value I showed was: Use your time wisely because at the start I didn't slack of when tackling the enormous pile.

The leadership trait I showed was Resilence because I keeped trying and trying to get all the books put away from the pile.

Band excellence #1

On Tuesday we had a full band practice we got all tuned up quickly, then we had a run threw of the song ( Hey Jude ), I could tell Mr Rule didn't think we were really getting into the song which we weren't so he gave us another song to practice which was "Cant stop the feeling" we were so pleased as we all really wanted that. So we started practising that ,but most of the session we were helping Emily our drummer find the right beat to play. Overall this was probably my favourite practice we have had so far.

The care value I showed was : Be a caring friend because we all helped Emily find the right beat.

The leadership trait I showed was resilence because when we got given the new song (Can't stop the feeling) There was some very hard chords so I showed resilence by trying and trying until I mastered the chord.
